Adagio for Strings

Samuel Barber

Level: Beginner (easy)

"Adagio for Strings" is a moving and world-famous orchestral work composed by Samuel Barber in 1936. Originally written as the second movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11, Barber later rewrote it for string orchestra, bringing it international fame. Because it is a very calm piece, it is quite easy to play.

Tips for Playing

✔ Practice step by step: Repeat the Slow section as many times as needed until you feel comfortable, then move on to the next chapter.

✔ Hands separately first: Start by practicing the right hand (melody), then the left hand, and finally both together.

✔ Play with a partner: One person can play the melody while the other plays the accompaniment—great for learning together!

✔ Practice daily: Even just 15 minutes a day will help you improve steadily.

✔ Take your time: enjoy the process, and have fun playing!
